Ataur Rahman did not arrive in façade engineering with a grand plan. He arrived with curiosity and a design role, mostly focused on drawings and technical detailing, in a field he was still learning to understand. What he found, as he worked and looked more closely, was a discipline of remarkable depth: a place where architecture, engineering, materials science and performance intersect in every single panel of every single building.
That curiosity grew into genuine interest. The interest grew into expertise. And expertise, combined with the kind of leadership that comes from being trusted with real responsibility early, grew into a career that has taken him from Kolkata to Dubai and into the role of Director, Gulf Region at Sahvia Consultant, one of the region’s most respected façade consultancy and engineering practices.
His story is not one of a straight path or a single defining moment. It is one of a professional who paid attention, kept asking why and never stopped learning. In an industry that rewards exactly those qualities, that has made all the difference.
Practicality, accuracy and the team as the real asset
Ataur’s approach to his work is grounded in three things: practicality, accuracy and clarity. Whatever he produces must be realistic, buildable and easy for others to understand. Deadlines matter. Consistency matters. But the real strength, as he sees it, comes from the team.
He keeps his team engaged in discussions, encourages them to share ideas and works alongside them to find solutions. He does not treat colleagues as junior or senior roles to be managed. He treats them as the most important asset of any project. When everyone feels valued and aligned, the work becomes smoother, milestones become more achievable and quality becomes a natural outcome rather than a forced one.
Doing the job well, for Ata, means delivering quality while building a strong and motivated team around it. The two are not separate goals. They are the same goal.
What the GCC now demands from a façade
The shift Ataur thinks about most right now reflects exactly where this region’s ambitions have moved. Clients and architects no longer simply ask for a façade. They ask for parametric geometries, sustainable performance, strong visual identity and the kind of presence that makes a building unmistakable. Every building, in its own way, wants to be iconic. That pushes façade engineers to explore new materials, advanced finishes and deeper engineering solutions with every brief.
The challenge, and it is a constant one, is that innovation must work hand in hand with practicality. A façade is never only about beauty. It must meet safety and performance requirements, durability standards, maintenance demands, authority compliance, building codes, client expectations, budgets, the extreme conditions of the Gulf climate and tight project timelines. Holding all of those factors in tension simultaneously is the daily reality of façade engineering at the highest level.
Ataur’s response is structured and team-driven. He focuses on understanding the building physics, setting clear benchmarks, maintaining checklists, tracking progress closely and ensuring that strong coordination allows the team to adapt quickly when priorities shift, as they often do. He always has a Plan B ready. For him, responding to industry challenges means staying practical, staying prepared and staying collaborative.
Study the why, not just the what
Looking back at his earlier years, Ataur’s advice to those just starting out is one of the most practically valuable things any young engineer in this field could hear. When he began his career, he saw façade work mainly as design and drafting. He followed instructions from seniors without fully understanding the purpose behind each detail. It took years to realise that façade engineering is far more than producing drawings. It is about understanding building physics, material behaviour, performance requirements, codes and the reason behind every single decision.
He wishes someone had told him early on to study beyond the drawings. To understand why materials change across a project, why panel modulation matters, why glass thickness varies and how specifications, bills of quantities and design reports shape the entire façade system. That awareness only came when he began leading projects and had access to the full technical picture. Only then did he see the gap between being a designer and being a façade engineer.
Because of that experience, he always encourages his team to learn the purpose behind their work, not simply complete the task in front of them. In his previous organisation, he initiated weekly façade discussion sessions so that seniors and juniors could share knowledge, challenges and solutions together. That habit of learning with purpose is something he wishes he had started from the very first day.
From completing tasks to creating impact
Ataur’s definition of success has shifted in a way that reflects the arc of a career built deliberately and with growing awareness. When he started out, success meant completing tasks accurately and on time. Producing drawings. Meeting deadlines. Following instructions correctly. It was a task-focused definition, and at that stage of a career, it is the right one.
As his career progressed and he took on leadership, coordination and project responsibility, his understanding deepened. Success is no longer about finishing work. It is about the quality, clarity and impact of that work. About how well a solution performs. How effectively a team collaborates. How confidently a project moves forward.
Today, success for Ataur means growth, his own and his team’s. It means building strong collaboration, solving problems with purpose and contributing to a project in a way that elevates everyone involved. It means creating an environment where people feel supported, informed and motivated. It means delivering value, not just deliverables. His definition of success has shifted, as he puts it simply and precisely, from completing tasks to creating impact.
The case for early collaboration
There is one thing Ataur finds himself pushing back against consistently in this industry, and it is worth stating clearly. Façade engineering is still too often treated as a drawing-based discipline rather than a core part of the design process. Many stakeholders assume that façade work is primarily about producing elevations, details and shop drawings. The deeper engineering behind it is overlooked. And too often, façade engineers are brought into the process too late.
For standard building designs, this may not cause significant problems. But for complex or iconic façades, early technical involvement is not optional. When architects finalise a building elevation without consulting façade engineers at the concept stage, the design may look impressive while failing to account for material limitations, structural requirements, fixing systems, panel modulation or performance criteria. The result is value engineering, redesign and changes that move the project away from the original intent, causing delays and frustration for every stakeholder involved.
Ataur always advocates for early collaboration. When façade engineers are part of the process from the beginning, the design becomes more practical, more buildable and more aligned with performance requirements. Rework is reduced. The architect’s vision is protected. Project delivery is more reliably on time. A façade is not an aesthetic element added at the end of a process. It is a technical system that must respond to climate, building physics, safety, durability, feasibility, maintenance and compliance from the very start.
The responsibility that shaped everything
Ataur closes by acknowledging the opportunities that made him who he is as a professional. His journey, he reflects honestly, was shaped more by responsibility than by direct mentorship. He was not guided step by step. But he was trusted, and that trust proved to be the most powerful teacher of all.
He acknowledges Star Alubuild, part of DLF, and its CEO Mr. Steven Hunter for giving him early opportunities to work from the front. The TCS project in Kolkata was a turning point: he was entrusted with design development and leading the façade design team, an experience that built his confidence in both technical decision-making and leadership.
Another milestone was the La Mer project in Dubai, which came at exactly the right moment in his career and allowed him to take on both design leadership and site coordination. He expresses genuine gratitude to Technical Glass and Aluminium Management, particularly Project Director Mr. Omar Al Halabi and Technical and Design Head Mr. Feras Fayad, for trusting him with that responsibility. Their confidence in his abilities, freely given at a critical stage, played a significant role in the professional he has become.
Future Vision
Looking ahead, Ataur believes the next era of façade engineering will be shaped by intelligent systems, deeper digital integration and sustainability at a more advanced level. AI-driven modelling, performance-based design, adaptive façade systems and new-generation materials will influence how buildings respond to climate, identity and long-term durability.
For Ata, the future is not about façades that look iconic alone, but façades that think, perform and endure. The region’s ambition demands this shift, and the industry is ready for that evolution, as long as innovation remains buildable, efficient and grounded in real project conditions.
